The United States currently imposes a commercial, economic, and financial embargo against Cuba can, and does, conduct international trade with many countries, including many US allies; however, US based companies which trade in Cuba There's no reason why we can't be friends with the Cubans, and vice versa.

China has a strict communist government, and yet the US has no problem trading with China. On the other hand, Cuba, also communist, has been under trade embargoes for decades that have only lessened in recent years. Update: @ Daniel: That is true now, but when trade started, that was not the case. Cuba is a small country, with little economic benefit to the US even with free trade and movement of people. China, on the other hand, is a huge market for US companies, and the US benefits enormously from a good diplomatic relationship with the country.
