Unitized employer stock fund
We've dealt w/ both unitized and nonunitized employer stock funds in 401ks. I am in favor of unitization -- particularly for a thinly traded stock. I agree w/ Mojo, ersf and others that the sponsor and/or trustee need to make a special effort to educate participants as to what unitization means and the plan committee should set some realisitic guidelines as to how much cash to carry and how/purchases sales occur. The Humana Stock Fund is a unitized stock fund designed for participants in the Humana Retirement Savings Plan and the Humana Puerto Rico Retirement Savings Plan (collectively the “Plan”). The Humana Stock Fund (the “Fund”) allows you to participate in Humana’s future through the Fund’s principal investment in common stock of Humana. Fellow Fools, I work for a large company and receive the company match to my 401k contributions in the form of company stock. A few months ago (when my smaller company was bought by this larger company) the plan changed from shares of stock (which I could track by looking at the closing stock price daily) to shares of what Fidelity calls a "Unitized Stock Fund." unitized fund. Definition. A fund that is sold in "units" specified by a fund manager, rather than shares of fund-managed assets. This may be done to provide quicker fund transactions, or to enable flexibility in the management of underlying funds without affecting investor value. Unitized Shares: When a stock fund is unitized, a participant’s balance in the fund is expressed in “unitized shares” or “units” instead of shares per se. Unitized funds operate similarly to a mutual fund, in that they are composed of stock, and a small percentage of cash or another short-term interest-bearing vehicle. Unitized stock fund The participants' claim with respect to fiduciary mismanagement of the company stock funds was based on the structure of the CSFs as unitized stock funds. Under the unitized funds, participants owned units of the fund, rather than shares of the company stock.

Are there any hidden problems when investments in employer stock are done on a unitized basis? The third party administrator is pushing for it, so that it can use daily valuation for all of the investment vehicles available under the plan. While I am not overly enamored with unitizing investments
